Marie Frieda Albiez

Marie Frieda Albiez (born January 23, 1876 in Basel , † June 23, 1922 in Basel) was the founder of the St. Katharina Works, which later became active throughout Switzerland, and one of the outstanding exponents of social and charitable engagement, especially for young women in of the Catholic diaspora Basel.

Life

The daughter of fitter Joseph Albiez and Maria Anna Turgi attended the Catholic school in Basel. Due to the early death of her father, Frieda Albiez began an apprenticeship as a straightener and then worked in various client houses in the city of Basel. A serious illness prevented entry into a French congregation . A laundry was opened around 1900. In 1910 an atonement association was founded. In 1913 the company moved into a property to operate the St. Katharinaheim as a rescue home with training workshops for "fallen and morally endangered girls". Later a constitution followed as a community of sisters.
