Marie Hicks

Marie Hicks (born December 20, 1923 in Harlem , † April 19, 2007 ) was an African-American civil rights activist . She was best known for leading a strike and protest initiative at Girard College in Philadelphia in 1965 and 1966 against school rules that only allowed "white" students to be taught. Through her success, she was able to get her son accepted into this college in 1968.

She later got a job as a maid at La Salle University and studied on the side; she achieved a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1980.
