Mariel Vázquez is a Mexican mathematical biologist who specializes in the topology of DNA . She is a professor of mathematics and microbiology and molecular genetics at the University of California, Davis .

education

Vázquez received her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1994 . In 2000, she received her PhD in mathematics from Florida State University . Her dissertation was Tangle Analysis of Site-specific Recombination: Gin and Xer Systems ; the supervisor was De Witt Sumners .

Career

Vázquez was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 2000 to 2005 , where she researched mathematical and biophysical models of DNA repair in human cells with Rainer Sachs in the group for mathematical radiobiology . From 2005 to 2014 she was a faculty member in the math department at San Francisco State University . In 2014, she was accepted into the Faculty of the University of California, Davis, as a CAMPOS Fellow.

Awards

In 2011, Vázquez received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation for research into topological mechanisms of DNA untying. In 2012, she was the first faculty member at San Francisco State University to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers . In 2013 she received funding from the National Institutes of Health for a computer analysis of the DNA untying process. In 2016 she was selected for the Blackwell Tapia Prize, which is awarded every two years to a mathematician who has made significant contributions to research in a field and addressed the problem of the underrepresentation of minority groups in mathematics. In 2017 she was elected to the first class of Fellows in the Association for Women in Mathematics . She was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2020 for contributions to research and public relations at the intersection of topology and molecular biology and for service to the mathematical community, especially to underrepresented groups .
