Marienbasilika (Lodonga)

The Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Africa ( English Basilica of Our Lady, Sultana of Africa ) is a Roman Catholic church in Lodonga in the Yumbe district of northern Uganda . The church of the diocese of Arua is dedicated to the Mother of God and has the title of a minor basilica .

Church building

Church building in the predominantly Muslim region was driven forward at the instigation of the missionaries Pietro Valcavi and Bernardo Sartoriam. The church was built on a stone foundation with a length of 45 meters and a width of 25 meters, it reaches a height of 12 meters with the use of 750,000 bricks. It was consecrated on June 24, 1927.

Another story

The church was renovated in 1960 and received a new floor and a choir platform with a spiral staircase. In 1961 Pope John XXIII raised the church became a minor basilica .

The church was damaged in the fighting to overthrow Idi Amins in 1979. The repair was carried out in 1990 with a new tin roof instead of the old shingles. The interior has also been renovated.

The annual pilgrimage to the feast of the Immaculate Conception takes place on December 8th . Over 2000 pilgrims come to Londongo over distances of up to two days. The basilica is looked after by the Comboni missionaries .
