Mariengrotto in Osterzell

The Mariengrotto in Osterzell , a municipality in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu , is a replica of the grotto in the southern French city of Lourdes . The grotto is located in the west of the Osterzell district in the Grottensteige.

The grotto was built in 1899 after the innkeeper at the time, Klement Altheimer, came back from a pilgrimage to Lourdes with two other men and wanted a replica of the grotto in Lourdes on their own property. Initially, explosions were carried out to make the grotto accessible. As a result, the place of prayer was built and the statue of the Virgin was made. After the Second World War, the Mariengrotto was in poor condition and was refurbished by the citizens of Osterzell. In 1999 the grotto celebrated its 100th anniversary, ten years later the last renovation work to date took place.

May devotions take place regularly in the Mariengrotte . Furthermore, there has been an annual candlelight procession to the Mariengrotto since the 1960s .
