The kitty tetra ( Hyphessobrycon heliacus ) is a South American freshwater fish from the river basin of the upper Rio Tapajós . The tetra, only 2.8 cm long, was only described in 2002 , but was already known in the aquarium hobby by its common name and was named after the ancient Greek word for sun ( helios ) because of its bright yellow color .

features

Hyphessobrycon heliacus is golden yellow with yellow-orange to red fins. The upper third of the iris is red. A large, dark spot lies on the tail fin stalk, two yellow spots immediately behind it. The dark spot takes up about half the area of the caudal fin stalk and extends to the caudal fin. Hyphessobrycon heliacus can be distinguished from other Hyphessobrycon species by its coloration, the relatively large spot on the tail fin stalk , the elongated dorsal and pelvic rays, the thick rays of the anal fin and the non-elongated first anal rays. The last three characteristics are only found in males. From the very similar, but silvery Hyphessobrycon elachys , Hyphessobrycon heliacus can be distinguished by its golden yellow color and the line running in a zigzag line along the horizontal center line of the body. The caudal fin is forked, with the lower lobe slightly longer. The sideline is incomplete.

Way of life

Hyphessobrycon heliacus occurs in fast flowing rivers with gravel bottoms , but was only caught on the muddy bottom in stagnant marginal areas of these waters with heavy vegetation.
