Marienkapelle Oberstimm

The Marienkapelle (also Lourdes chapel or field chapel under the lime tree ) in Oberstimm , a district of the municipality of Manching in the district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm in Bavaria , was built in 1822. It is a protected architectural monument .

history

In the place of today's chapel, a chapel in honor of Our Lady was built in 1720 . This was dilapidated and demolished. In 1822, eight-year-old Aloys Schwaiger is said to have had an apparition to Mary . A woman with a “black face” appeared to the boy and told him that a new chapel should be built on the site of the old chapel. The Oberstimmers complied with the request and built today's Marienkapelle within two months. Rumors about the apparition of Mary meant that up to 2000 pilgrims came to Oberstimm on Sundays and public holidays. In 1824 the government ordered the chapel to be closed - presumably because of the lack of accommodation for the pilgrims. In 1831 the chapel was opened to the public again. The chapel was renovated in 1979/80.

Furnishing

In 1900 a Lourdes grotto was set up in the chapel , which was originally equipped with a statue of Our Lady and the figure of little Bernadette . During the renovation, this was exchanged for Nazarene figures : Mary surrounded by Peter and St. Bartholomew . A coat of arms on the south side contains the inscription "JOAN ANTON DGSRJPEE" (Johann Anton by God's grace of the Holy Roman Empire, Prince, Bishop of Eichstätt ) and commemorates the founder of the chapel.
