The Evangelical Lutheran Marienkapelle is located in the district of Stiepelse in the municipality of Amt Neuhaus in the Lower Saxony district of Lüneburg .

The Marienkapelle is located in the middle of the village of Stiepelse a few hundred meters northeast of the Elbe and is directly on the Elbe Cycle Path . The chapel area is surrounded by a brick wall. There are isolated graves on the site.

history

Presumably there was already a chapel in Stiepelse in 1206. The first written mention of a chapel in the village comes from 1668.

The direct previous building was destroyed in a fire. The current chapel was built between 1852 and 1853. The inauguration took place on the 3rd Advent in 1853.

In 1913 the chapel was closed by the police due to the lack of stability of the roof beams. In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, it was damaged by fire.

The chapel belonged to the parish of Barskamp until the division of Germany . This is due to the fact that the two places were on the same side of the Elbe from the 13th century onwards before the changes made by mankind.

Between 1992 and 1997 the chapel was completely renovated. In the course of this, the original pulpit altar was reconstructed.

Today the Marienkapelle belongs to the parish Neuhaus in the parish of Lüneburg of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover .

In the roof turret there are two church bells from 1994 by the Bachert bell foundry and a striking bell .
