Location of Barskamp in Lower Saxony

Barskamp ( Low German Beschampt ) is a place in the north east of Lower Saxony and is now a district of Bleckede .

history

The Barskamp area was settled as early as the Neolithic ( 4th millennium BC ). This is evidenced by the megalithic complex in Barskamp and the megalithic complex in the Schieringer Forest .

Today's church tower is an old defensive tower and is dated around 950.

The census of September 13, 1950 showed that 1073 inhabitants lived in 274 households in the village. On March 1, 1974 Barskamp was incorporated into the city of Bleckede.

Buildings

St. Vitus Church in Barskamp

The round tower built from field stones , formerly a defense and watchtower, is the oldest part of the St. Vitus Church . Its construction (like that of the round tower churches in Artlenburg , Thomasburg and Suderburg ) was probably initiated by the Saxon Duke Hermann Billung around 950.

The second oldest part of the church is the choir. It is dated to the end of the 14th century. According to documents from the Medingen monastery , this is probably not the first church, as pastors can be found in Barskamp as early as the 13th century.

Bell from 1735

The baroque altar comes from the workshop of the Lauenburg sculptor Nicolaus Hermann Themund , the altarpiece by the Lüneburg painter Heinrich Melchior Westphal . Both date from 1770.

Two bells hang in the church tower.

  • The older one dates from 1325 and weighs 24 quintals . The inscription in Gothic capitals reads: "O Rex Glorie Veni Cum Pace" (King of Glory, come in peace).
  • The second bell weighs 12 quintals and dates from 1735. It bears the inscription "Mein Thönen calls herbey to hear the Lord's word - so be ready it is still time to convert to God - Mefecit M Lorentz Oehmann in Luneburg" and was Cast by master Lorenz Oehmann in Lüneburg.

In Barskamp there is a primary school with 146 children in eight classes. The children taught here come from the surrounding districts of Bleckedes, namely Alt Garge , Göddingen and Walmsburg .
