Location of Alt Garge in Lower Saxony

geography

Alt Garge is six kilometers southeast of Bleckede and west of the Elbe .

history

In the first half of the twentieth century, numerous smaller industrial companies settled in the then independent municipality, so that the place sometimes looked more like an industrial area with an attached housing estate. Even today, the architecture, which differs significantly from that of the other districts, with apartment buildings along Elbuferstraße ( Hauptstraße there ) is a reminder of that time, but no industrial operations have survived.

The census of September 13, 1950 showed that there were 625 residents in 189 households in the village. On March 1, 1974, Alt Garge was incorporated into the city of Bleckede.

Alt-Garge coal-fired power station

The Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke (HEW) began building a coal-fired power station in Alt-Garge, directly on the Elbe , during World War II . The first power plant block went online in 1946 with 70 megawatts.

In 1974 the power plant was shut down. In 1987/88 the power plant's facilities were dismantled. Remnants of the systems are still visible.

In the 1970s, consideration was given to building a nuclear power plant in Alt Garge.

Alt Garge concentration camp branch

To carry out the construction of coal-fired power plant Old-Garge Nazi leaders in 1944 built a new warehouse complex that serves as the central warehouse in Old Garge the Neuengamme concentration camp was operated. The prisoners were brought from the Neuengamme and Sachsenhausen concentration camps . In the vicinity of what was then the Alt-Garge concentration camp external command, a memorial commemorates the fate of the prisoners.
