Sprockhoff no. 705

The passage grave of Barskamp with the Sprockhoff no. 705 is a passage grave of the funnel cup culture (TBK). It originated in the Neolithic between 3500 and 2800 BC. Neolithic monuments are an expression of the culture and ideology of Neolithic societies. Their origin and function are considered to be the hallmarks of social development.

location

The megalithic facility is located southwest of Barskamp , a district of the Bleckede municipality in the Lüneburg district in Lower Saxony , in the Sandberge forest north of the road from Barskamp to Köstorf, just before the L222 junction to Nindorf .

description

The barren bed , which is only about 15 meters long , with the remains of a comparatively long chamber of nine meters, lies on sandy dune terrain. The edging of the trapezoidal bed is incomplete, only a few stones are in place , most of them have fallen over. None of the capstones in the chamber have survived. Although some are missing, the remaining dozen or so bearing stones give a good impression of the structure and positioning of the chamber.

The northwest-southeast-oriented system was only discovered in 1960 when a sand dune was being removed. In 1964 it was excavated by H. Köster. It turned out that the system was already in ruins at the presumably late point in time when the sand was flooded. Two additional masonry between the stones of the north-eastern long side and part of the floor paving in the chamber were found. An arrowhead , several clay vessels, two complete ones and the remains of a third clay drum were found on the intact pavement , which allow dating to the Middle Neolithic.

Although there is agreement on the reconstruction of a chamber with six capstones, there is no agreement about the appearance of the entrance. While Friedrich Laux assumes an entrance from the southwest side of the chamber, Ernst Sprockhoff reconstructs an aisle-free chamber (a stone corridor is not occupied). This rare variant of the passage grave, also known as the portal grave, could have had a wooden access area.

There is a round tower church in Barskamp . Further megalithic systems are located in the nearby Schieringer Forest .
