Smaller cities in Germany

There are many smaller cities that are still worth seeing, such as Mühlberg (here the Elbe Cycle Route also leads a short distance through Brandenburg ) or Jerichow with its brick monastery, which is historically significant .

The first German cyclist church , the Weßnig cyclist church , is located on the Elbe cycle path between Belgern and Torgau, and another one in the city of Wehlen .

On the German side, the cycle path has no significant differences in altitude, except on the southern section of the Hitzacker - Geesthacht on the left Elbe . On a large part of the route there are both right and left Elbe bike paths and numerous side routes.

Elbe cycle path in Hamburg

Hamburg. Bicycle path between the wholesale market and the Oberhafen. View towards Oberhafenbrücke and city center

In Hamburg, the cycle path at the level of the Neue Elbbrücken initially led along busy roads such as Amsinckstrasse. Relocation across Entenwerder Island to the promenade along the Oberhafen at the wholesale market to the Oberhafenbrücke has now been completed. You can drive with little car as far as the Speicherstadt . In the course of the long-term development of the Baakenhafen district of Hafencity , a separate cycle path is to be implemented along the Elbe and through Hafencity.

history

In the 1990s, the marking of individual sections in the Elbe Cycle Path began. In 1993, for example, his section in Saxon Switzerland was marked and signposted. From 1998 the route was made more level and paved more often. The first package tours were also launched this year. The first information brochures followed in 2001, as the Elberadweg was used more and more. After the floods in Central Europe in 2002 , tourism collapsed for a short time, as many parts of the cycle path first had to be repaired. The 2013 flood caused further damage, but it was easy to repair.

Since 2005, the Elberadweg has repeatedly been voted Germany's most popular cycle path. It was not until 2019 that he had to cede his top position to the Weser Cycle Path .
