The Church of the Holy Mother of God , or Marienkirche for short ( Armenian Թավրիժի Սուրբ Մարիամ Աստվածածին եկեղեցի T'avrizhi Surb Mariam Astvatsatsin yekeghets'i , Persian کلیسای مریم مقدس) is a church in the Iranian city of Tabriz that was completed in 1785. It belongs to the Atrpatakan ( Azerbaijan ) diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church located in Tabriz and is located in the city center of Tabriz, where it is an important point of reference for the Armenian community there .

Location

The Church of the Holy Mother of God stands at the intersection of Schariati Street (Schahnaz Nord) and Dschomhuri Street in the historic Dik Baschi district of Tabriz city center. For many years it was the seat of the Armenian Archbishop of Tabriz, who now resides in a nearby building. There are several outbuildings, including the Tabriz Armenian Museum, operated by the Tabriz Prelature , next to the church.

history

A predecessor to the Marienkirche was built in the 12th century. Marco Polo , who traveled through the city of Tabriz (Tauris) in 1275 on his way to China , mentions the church in his travelogue.

The oldest tombstone in St. Mary's Church dates from the 16th century. According to an inscription, the church, like the entire city, was destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 1780 and the current building was built on the old foundation walls from 1782 to 1785.

The church underwent major renovations under the Tabriz bishop Nshan Topouzian , who was prelate of the diocese from August 2002 until his death in April 2010 .

architecture

The Marienkirche of Tabriz (Armenian Թավրիզ T'avriz ) is 16 m long and 14 m wide. The bell tower stands on four square pillars in the center of the church and has four arches, the inner surfaces of which between the pillars are decorated with paintings with biblical motifs.

On the inside of the wall around the Church of St. Mary in Tabriz there is a Khachkar from the Armenian Cemetery in Julfa , which has belonged to the Republic of Azerbaijan since 1991 (since 1921 to the Azerbaijani SSR) and was systematically destroyed by the Azerbaijani military in 2005 .
