Marienkirche

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( Polish: Kościół Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny ) is one of the main churches in Toruń in northern Poland . The Gothic brick building was built in the 14th century and, along with the old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

history

The church was part of the Franciscan monastery of Thorn , which was founded around 1239 in the city that was just being built. Remnants of the first church still exist. Construction began in the late 13th century and was completed in the 14th century. Since 1557 St. Mary's Church has been the most important Protestant church in Poland . In 1724, after the unrest in the city, it was expropriated as an act of punishment and handed over to the Catholic Order of St. Bernard , which was settled in Thorn especially for this purpose. He re-Catholicized the equipment designed 160 years earlier for Protestant worship in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation and used the church until 1821. Since 1830 the church has been a Roman Catholic parish church.

architecture

The current church was essentially built in the 14th century. It is a three-aisled hall church with a length of 80 m, a width of 27 m and a height of 27 m. The interior was redesigned in baroque style in the 18th century . Wall paintings from around 1380 with depictions of saints are remarkable. The choir stalls are from the 15th century. The high altar was made in the 18th century.
