The Marienlinde natural monument is located in the municipality of Sulzberg in the Bregenz Forest , Vorarlberg , Austria . The Marienlinde is a linden tree (Tilia) with a statue of Our Lady with the baby Jesus in a cave . The linden tree is under nature protection ( list entry ).

location

The linden tree is located in the village center at about 1017  m above sea level. A. in the south-west behind the parish church St. Laurentius . To the northeast about 20 meters next to the linden tree is the old rectory, and to the southeast about 20 meters away is the Haus zur Marienlinde ( Laurenzisaal Sulzberg ).

history

The linden tree is said to be around 400 to 500 years old. The cavity in which the statue is located is said to have existed for a long time. The statue of the Virgin has been in the cavity of the trunk of the linden tree since the First World War . On a rectangular, beige-colored plaque above the statue, a motto is written in black:

Mary of Victory;
end the war
u. bless us with your child
from the Marienlinde 1916

Another round plaque above it reads on a medium brown background in white letters: The Marien Linde .

The tree had to be extensively renovated in order to continue to guarantee its stability.

Dimensions of the linden tree

The tree is about 35 meters high and has a trunk circumference of more than 5 meters. From a trunk height of around 5 meters, the tree branches into a crown around 30 meters wide . The tree trunk as a whole inclines about 15 ° from the vertical towards the southeast and the treetop also largely follows this incline.
