Marian column

The Marian column is located in front of the Church of the Assumption of Mary on Marienplatz in Appelhülsen , a district of the municipality of Nottuln in the Coesfeld district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Marian column was donated to the church in Appelhülsen by Bernhard Rawe from Essen in 1904 and was consecrated on the Assumption of Mary in the same year. In 2003/2004 it had to be thoroughly renovated as it had been badly affected by the weather. It was re-inaugurated on its 100th birthday in 2004.

The municipality of Nottuln has included the column as a monument under number A52 in the list of monuments .

description

The neo-Gothic Marian column has a total height of 5.40 m, the statue of the Virgin Mary itself is almost 2 m high. It was originally surrounded by eight smaller figures, only one of which is completely preserved. The heads of two other figures are missing, all others are no longer there.

The column is surrounded by a wreath of five round fountain bowls made of natural stone, in which water fountains originally gushed. The fountain bowls are currently planted with boxwood balls.
