Maria Ivanovna Kirbasova

Marija Ivanovna Kirbassowa ( Russian Мария Ивановна Кирбасова ; * 1941 , USSR ; † 2011 , Sipoo , Finland ) was a Russian human rights activist . She founded and led the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia , which received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) in 1996 .

Life

Marija Kirbassowa was a Kalmuck woman . She and her family were deported to Siberia during the Second World War . In 1953 they were able to return.

In 1984 their only son died while doing military service. Maria Kirbassova was one of the most important organizers of actions and protests against the conditions in the Soviet Army . In 1991 she was the main initiator of the founding of the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia and became its chairman. In 1995 she became involved with the Committee against Human Rights Violations in the Chechen War and for the rights of young Russian conscripts .

In 2008 she moved to live with her daughter in Finland and she died there in 2011.
