Marijan Hanžeković

Marijan Hanžeković (born January 18, 1952 in Zagreb ; † January 28, 2018 there ) was a Croatian lawyer, businessman and art collector.

Life

His father of the same name was a financial expert and professor at the University of Economics in Zagreb, his mother Nada a doctor. In 1970 he graduated from the classical grammar school and then graduated from the law faculty in Zagreb. In 1978 he opened his first law firm. In 1994 he founded the bar association Hanžeković, Radaković & Partner (later Hanžeković & Partner) with Milan Radaković and other colleagues. This developed into the largest law firm in Croatia with over 200 employees.

From 1994 to 2000 he was President of the Croatian Bar Association. His legal representation of large companies and institutions, especially in debt collection proceedings against citizens, earned him the nickname “King of debt collections”.

He also owned a savings bank and a pharmaceutical company (Veterina, since 2008 Genera). In May 2014 he took over the media company Europapress Holding from the banking group Hypo Alpe-Adria . The house was renamed Hanza Media in September 2016.

Marijan Hanžeković was a member of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and the Croatian Social-Liberal Party (HSLS). He was also the President of the Zagreb Basketball Club (2000–2007 and 2017–2018), the founder and president of the Croatian Basketball Association (1998–1999), the President of the Zagreb Airplane Association (since 2009) and the Croatian Sailing Association (2011–2012). He was a freemason and treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Croatia. On the recommendation of Franjo Luković, he became a member of the Trilateral Commission .

Marijan Hanžeković died on January 28, 2018 at the age of 66 from complications from pancreatic cancer .
