Hrvatska narodna stranka - Liberalni Demokratiei (HNS) (German Croatian People's Party - Liberal Democrats) is a left-wing liberal party in Croatia .

history

The origins of the party go back to the 19th century . As part of the predominantly Croatian Illyrian movement , which sought equality between Croats and other South Slav peoples within the Habsburg monarchy , it was founded in 1841 under the name Ilirska narodna stranka (Illyrian People's Party). Josip Juraj Strossmayer and Ivan Kukuljević-Sakcinski were among the main founders . Initially, the party had great influence in Croatia. In 1905 she joined the Croatian-Serbian coalition . The People's Party was not re-established in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia or in the Federal People's Republic .

Start-up and current development

The re-establishment took place only at the end of 1990 with significant participation of the former leaders of the Croatian Spring , Miko Tripalo and Savka Dabčević-Kučar , when the coalition of the people's unity had collapsed. In the 1992 elections, the People's Party won 6.7% or six of the 138 seats and thus played a rather subordinate role. The building contractor Radimir Čačić became chairman in 1993. In the 1995 election, the HNS participated as part of the United List u. a. together with the Croatian Peasant Party . The list came in at 18.3% and 18 of the 127 seats, making it the strongest opposition force. In 1997, the future president, Stjepan Mesić, joined the now liberal party. In 2000 the alliance fell back to 15.6% and 24 of the now 151 seats and took part in the social democratic coalition government under Ivica Račan . In the same year, Mesić was elected president with 41% in the first and 56% in the second ballot, and the sociologist Vesna Pusić was appointed chairwoman of the HNS. In 2003, the HNS only entered parliamentary elections together with the regional Primorsko-goranski savez , won 8.0% and 14 of 152 seats and went into the opposition.

After the parliamentary elections in 2007, the party remained in the opposition with 6.7% of the vote (7 seats). Radimir Čačić has been party chairman again since April 2008 .

At the end of 2010 the Kukuriku coalition was founded with the aim of running in the parliamentary elections on December 4, 2011 together with SDP , IDS and HSU . On December 4, 2011, Kukuriku was the strongest parliamentary group.

At the 11th Party Congress on March 17, 2012, Radimir Čačić was confirmed as party leader in office, Vesna Pusić and Ivan Vrdoljak were elected vice- chairmen .

The HNS is a member of the Liberal International and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe .
