As Navy Lenhart syndrome , the simultaneous occurrence of a is nodular , with or without autonomy and of an immunogenic hyperthyroidism ( Graves' disease hereinafter).

The surgeons David Marine and Carl H. Lenhart , who worked in Cleveland , were the first to describe them in 1911. In the corresponding paper they presented their observations regarding the histopathology and iodine content of goiter . Among them were eight cases in which they had considered the simultaneous occurrence of a goiter and an adenoma to be coincidental.

The simultaneous occurrence of both causes of hyperfunction is rare and can make diagnosis difficult. The incidence of Marine-Lenhart syndrome is given as 1% for patients with Graves' disease.

Treatment is either surgical removal of the thyroid gland or radioiodine therapy . Therapy with anti-thyroid drugs may, however , be necessary for a limited time to produce euthyroidism .

The rare side effect of the additional occurrence of immunogenic hyperthyroidism a few weeks after radioiodine therapy due to thyroid autonomy (for example, autonomic adenoma ) is called Marine-Lenhart syndrome. This form of hyperfunction is mostly self-limiting; its frequency is given as 0.5 to 1%. In some of the cases, however, a second radioiodine therapy must be carried out because of the newly developed hyperthyroidism.
