MarineTraffic is an open service that manages position data and movements of ships .

History and Development

MarineTraffic was founded in 2006 by Dimitris Lekkas and fellow students at the University of the Aegean and uses the Automatic Identification System (AIS) as a radio system to exchange navigation and other ship data. Along with Vesseltracker, MarineTraffic is one of the leading and best-known providers of ship data based on AIS.

Individual ships can be searched for using a search mask, whereupon their exact positions are displayed in color on the map and data and images about the ships and information about their current routes can be called up. Several million pictures of ships can be seen on MarineTraffic. With more than 2,300 receiving stations, coastal and inland ports are covered worldwide. MarineTraffic provides the most extensive data collection and information in 34 languages for non-commercial users. Not only are the current positions displayed, information on departure time, arrival time, wind speeds and port information is also provided. More than six million users use MarineTraffic every month.

Products and services

MarineTraffic differentiates its products into four types: online services , data services, mobile apps and the business directory.

Online services include the extensive tools available on the MarineTraffic web platform. Online services enable tracking of individual ships and fleets with the live map through advanced filtering, custom mapping and notification services.

Data services are split into two different channels. API data services and archive data. API data services are designed for on-demand machine-to-machine access, real-time position data, static vessel information, and historical positions or events. Archive data are used for analysis and research. MarineTraffic has been collecting data since 2009.

Mobile apps consists of two different mobile offers, MarineTraffic and OnCourse. The MarineTraffic app integrates seamlessly with the web services, while OnCourse is designed to support boaters and give them the tools they need to get the most out of their hobby. Both apps are available in the app stores for iOS, Android, Windows and Amazon.
