Mario Conejo Maldonado

Mario Hernán Conejo Maldonado (born June 25, 1959 in Peguche , Otavalo , Imbabura ) is an Ecuadorian sociologist and politician with an ethnic Kichwa background. Since 2000 he has been the mayor of Otavalo.

Mario Conejo was one of the founders of the party-like indigenous movement Pachakutik . In 1996 he was elected mayor of Otavalo, making him the city's first indigenous mayor. Since then he has been elected twice. In 2006 he left the Pachakutik movement due to differences in content. Today he belongs to Rafael Correa's PAIS party .

Mario Conejo Maldonado is a brother of the writer Ariruma Kowii .
