Ariruma Kowii

Ariruma Kowii , formerly Jacinto Conejo Maldonado (born August 4, 1961 in Otavalo , Imbabura ) is an Ecuadorian poet who writes mainly in Kichwa . He is considered to be one of the most important kichwa writers of all.

Ariruma Kowii studied social sciences and politics at the Universidad Central del Ecuador . His volume of poetry, Mutsuktsurini , published in 1988, was one of the first books in Ecuador to be written exclusively in Kichwa, i.e. aimed at an indigenous readership.

On August 22nd, 2007 he was appointed Undersecretary for “Education of Indigenous Peoples” at the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education, responsible for “ Intercultural Dialogue ”. Ariruma Kowii defends the decision of the Rafael Correa government to place the Directorate for Intercultural Bilingual Education (DINEIB) under government control and accuses the indigenous association CONAIE of indoctrinating the pupils and students through the DINEIB so that they follow its political line.

Ariruma Kowii is a brother of the Mayor of Otavalo, Mario Conejo Maldonado .
