Mario Echandi Jiménez

Mario Echandi Jiménez (born June 17, 1915 in San José ; † July 30, 2011 ibid) was a Costa Rican politician (PUN). From 1958 to 1962 he was President of Costa Rica.

Life

Mario Echandi Jiménez was the son of Josefa Jiménez Rucavado and Alberto Echandi Montero. He attended the Liceo de Costa Rica and the Escuela de Derecho schools . He then worked professionally as a lawyer. In 1940 he was military attaché in Panama , then ambassador to Washington, DC and from 1949 to 1950 ambassador to the United Nations and the Organization of American States . He was a member of the Partido Unión Nacional . From 1950 to 1952 Echandi was Foreign Minister in the government of Otilio Ulate Blanco .

During his tenure as President of Costa Rica from 1958 to 1962, the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados was founded, a law on Christmas bonuses was passed and diplomatic relations with Cuba were broken off. From 1966 to 1968 he was again ambassador to Washington.

In 1970 and 1982 he ran again in the presidential election, but lost.

Mario Echandi Jiménez was married to Olga De Benedictis Antonelli. He died on July 30, 2011 at the age of 96.
