The productions of the Marionette Theater at Schönbrunn Palace , which are created in cooperation with stage and costume designers, sculptors, authors, composers and directors, differ in relation to the “human stage” only in their smaller scale. Playing with marionettes has a long tradition in Schönbrunn. During Mozart's lifetime, the puppet theater founded by Prince Esterházy played here at the invitation of Empress Maria Theresa and received the greatest applause. It is precisely the representation of a reduced world on stage that makes this art form so special. Human figures as well as objects are brought to life by a master hand and provide food for the imagination. The Marionette Theater at Schönbrunn Palace cultivates this art form using the most modern stage technology. This traditional playing technique was brought from Salzburg to Vienna 25 years ago and since then has also been passed on here in the Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater and is constantly being further developed and refined.

Many productions have been created since the Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater was founded in 1994. Currently (as of spring 2020) the program includes: Mozart's opera “The Magic Flute” and the musical “Sisi's Secret”. Operas and operettas prepared for children, “Die Kinderzauberflöte”, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”, “Die Kinderfledermaus”, “Hänsel & Gretel” as well as the fairy tales “Ritter Kamenbert”, “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” and “Lena is looking for the Christian child ". For special events “A little night music” as a ballet and “Mozart in Schönbrunn”.
