Mathias Andreas Marie (Thijs) Wöltgens (born November 30, 1943 in Kerkrade ; † May 7, 2008 ibid) was a Dutch politician . During his career he was a member of both the first chamber and the second chamber of the Dutch parliament . He was also mayor of the border town of Kerkrade for his party, the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA).

In the elections to the Second Chamber in 1977 Wöltgens was elected for the first time as a representative in the Dutch parliament. Since this election he has been a member of it until August 30, 1994 for 17 years without interruption. In parliament he made a name for himself mainly in the areas of financial and economic policy.

Before his career as a politician, Wöltgens worked as a teacher in economics. In addition, he was already politically active and moved into the city council of Kerkrade as a representative of the PvdA. From November 6, 1989 to May 3, 1994 Wöltgens was parliamentary group leader of the PvdA.

With his appointment as mayor of Kerkrade on September 1, 1994, his work as a parliamentarian ended after he had handed over the chairmanship to his successor six months earlier. Exactly six years to the day after he took office as mayor, Wöltgens took his leave in 2000. However, he remained in the First Chamber of Parliament, of which he was also a member from 1995 to 2002.

After Wöltgens resigned mayor's office, from September 2000 to August 2005 he took over the chairmanship of the board of directors of the Open Universiteit in Heerlen , the Dutch distance learning university, which is also the university with the most enrolled students in the Netherlands.

On April 14, 2005 Wöltgens moved as chairman of the Kamer van Koophandel , the Dutch counterpart to the DIHK .

Thijs Wöltgens died in Kerkrade on May 7, 2008 at the age of 64 from cardiac arrest.
