Marjo van der Knaap (born May 9, 1958 in Delft ) is a Dutch pediatric neurologist who studies (often congenital) white matter diseases in the brain of children ( leukodystrophies ).

Van der Knaap studied medicine at the Erasmus University Rotterdam with a degree in 1984 and received a doctorate in pediatric neurology from the University of Utrecht in 1991 . From 1999 she was a professor at the Free University of Amsterdam.

White matter disorders affect one in a thousand children and often have serious consequences. In her dissertation, she characterized white matter diseases using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thereby enabling a faster and more reliable diagnosis. She later succeeded in discovering five new diseases of this type. CACH syndrome . One of them was named after her, the Van der Knaap syndrome . In some cases she also determined the genes responsible for the disease and researched treatments for these diseases.

In 2008 she received the Spinoza Prize and she received the Sidney Carter Award from the American Academy of Neurology. In 2006 she became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences.
