Life

Mender received his training at a textile school and from 1955 worked as sales and advertising manager in a men's clothing factory in Munich, where he took his first fashion photographs. In 1961 he started his own business as a fashion photographer and advertising consultant without having received any professional training. In the same year he published the PR magazine Representatives of Fashion . His first collaborations with the airlines Pan Am and Lufthansa made it possible for him to travel to exotic countries, which set him apart from the work of his fellow photographers. In 1968 the first edition of his fashion magazine Mode Magazin appeared in his own publishing house Modepresse . In 1973 Fritz Gruber was appointed to the German Society for Photography (DPGh) . The first experiments with video technology have been carried out since 1979. He mixed the still primitive video technology with fashion photography and decided in 1981 to finally stop photography and continue working with video technology. In the same year he founded "One Studio GmbH" and converted his former photo studio into a television production studio. In 1983 he started with 3D computer animation. Since the 1990s, he has mainly followed the production of commercials and computer animations.

In 2013 he exhibited his photographic work in a large solo exhibition at the Van Horn gallery in Düsseldorf and received positive reviews at the Düsseldorf Photo Weekend that same year. He has been represented by Van Horn since 2013. In addition, he has received several awards throughout his career.

He doesn't build his photos according to photographic rules, so his own style has developed. He experiments extensively with multiple exposure techniques, filters, mirrors and other trick and design options. The equal symbiosis of fashion and setting is characteristic. The exotic landscapes take up a large and atmospheric part in his work and are not only used for decorative purposes for the photographed fashion.
