Mrk 709 ( Markarian 709 ) is a pair of two low- metallicity dwarf galaxies that are believed to interact with each other. Due to the redshift of this system consisting of the components Mrk 709 S and Mrk 709 N of z = 0.052, a distance of around 200 million parsecs (around 700 million light years) can be assumed. In Mrk 709 S, Reines et al. Evidence of an active supermassive black hole found; they estimated the stellar masses of the galaxies to be around 2.5 billion solar masses for Mrk 709 S and 1.1 billion solar masses for Mrk 709 N. With 10% of solar metallicity, Mrk 709 is one of the most metal-poor galaxies showing signs of an active galaxy core.
