Markgrafenpark in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The Markgrafenpark is located in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg on the block of Lindenstrasse , Markgrafenstrasse and Rudi-Dutschke-Strasse. It is named after the Margrave Philipp Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Schwedt , who owned a palace on Markgrafenstrasse .

history

After the Second World War , the area in southern Friedrichstadt was badly damaged and only received new impetus through the International Building Exhibition in 1984 . During this time, several apartment buildings were built on Lindenstrasse in classic Berlin perimeter block development . A block park was to be built on the approximately 5,000 m² area, which would include a playground and a planned expansion of the Axel Springer AG company . The existing parking lot of the Axel Springer high-rise was to be converted into a parking garage. Access was possible via Junkerstraße, which at the time linked the Markgrafenstraße as an extension of the Ritterstraße. The aim was to achieve a “structural reorganization of space-intensive parking spaces in the city center”. The project was not implemented, however, because the funds in the investment planning of the state of Brandenburg for the years 1986–1990 were missing.

The park was developed as part of a construction project at Am Markgrafenpark . A total of 17 buildings with a gross floor area of approx. 82,000 m² were planned. The first construction phase was completed in 2003, the third construction phase was initially not implemented. In July 2011, work began on completing the two southern building blocks.

The former Junkerstrasse is now only passable for pedestrians and cyclists.
