Marko Mihkelson (born November 30, 1969 in Valga ) is an Estonian politician . He belonged to the conservative party Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL). He has been a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) since 2003 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Valga, Mihkelson studied history at the University of Tartu . He completed his studies in 1999 with the master's thesis: "Venemaa poliitiline areng 1990-1996" ( The political development of the Russian Federation 1990-1996 ).

In 1993/94 he worked as a foreign editor for the Estonian daily newspaper " Postimees ". He was the correspondent of “Postimees” in Moscow from 1994 to 1997 and editor-in-chief of the paper from 1997 to 2000. From 2000 to 2003 he worked as the director of the Baltic Research Center for Russian Studies ( Balti Venemaa Uurimise Keskus ). From 2003 to 2007 he was chairman of the Estonian delegation to the Council of Europe .

From 2001 to 2017 Mihkelson was a member of Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL) and since 2003 he has been a member of the Estonian Parliament Riigikogu. There he is chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a member of the European Committee. He has also been head of the Estonian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since 2011 . Since 2012 he has been chairman of the Estonian NATO Association.

Mihkelson has published two books, an Estonian history textbook for high schools, and in 2010 a book entitled “Venemaa. Valguses ja varjus ”(“ Russia. In the light and in the shadow ”), in which he assesses the history and politics of Russia over the past thirty years. His main thesis is that Russian intelligence agencies have taken power there, and a large part of the Russian elite are linked to them.

Private

Marko Mihkelson has a daughter. His hobbies include golf and tennis.
