history

The Chemnitz market around 1850.

Chemnitz was at the intersection of two highways and thus had direct connections to Bohemia and larger cities such as Nuremberg, Leipzig, Dresden or Breslau. Long-distance traders settled near the Chemnitzfurt as early as the middle of the 12th century and before the city was actually founded. After the city was built in the floodplain, the highways were directed into the city.

In addition to the (main) market, the town also had a pot, wood and horse market . The granting of market rights by Emperor Konrad in 1143 and the ban mile allowed the market and with it the city to develop well.

Use / events

Weekly markets take place regularly on the square and at the end of the year it is used for the Christmas market.
