Marktgasse in the Algutsrum market

The Algutsrum market is a market in the village of Algutsrum on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .

The market place of Algutsrum is to the east of the church of Algutsrum and consists of two market streets standing at right angles to each other.

The market is known nationwide as the original market stalls from the 18th century are still in use here. The red stalls, which are typical for Sweden, only have wooden shutters on the front. When the stalls open, the shutters are opened. The upper one acts as rain and sun protection, the lower one acts as a counter. Since the market stalls have no other door, the sales staff have to climb into the hut via the shops.

Markets have been taking place in Algutsrum at least since around 1700. Originally, cattle and horses were mainly traded. Today the focus is more on sweets and handicrafts. From around the end of June to the end of September there are markets in the market in Algutsrum.
