Market relief and cultural landscape compensation

The market relief and cultural landscape compensation (MEKA) is an agri-environmental program of the state of Baden-Württemberg . As part of this program, farms can receive financial support from the state for the “introduction and maintenance of environmentally friendly or extensive production practices, the protection of natural resources and the preservation of the cultural landscape”. The aim of the funding is to secure grassland management and to promote environmentally friendly and market-relieving production practices. The funds for the funding come from the EU , the Federal Republic of Germany and the state of Baden-Württemberg. Revised in 2015, the program is now called the "Funding program for agri-environment, climate protection and animal welfare" (FAKT).

Eligible measures are divided into seven categories. Measures to "environmentally conscious business management" for example, are particularly environmentally friendly method of application of manure or compliance with certain crop rotations . The second category, "Preservation and care of the cultural landscape", includes measures such as extensive management of grassland or the management of particularly steep grassland. The third category is the "securing of landscape-cultivating, particularly endangered uses", this includes, for example, endangered livestock breeds , pastures typical of the area, vineyards and orchards . Category 4 is the "renouncement of chemical-synthetic means of production", category 5 the extensive and environmentally friendly plant production, which in addition to greening measures also includes the renouncement of growth regulators. Funding is also possible for the application of biological or biotechnical processes and for the maintenance of specially protected habitats such as biotopes.

The premium can be claimed by agricultural companies which, in accordance with EC Regulation No. 73/2009, have their headquarters in the European Union and cultivate agricultural land in Baden-Württemberg, as well as pheromone communities in fruit and viticulture, as well as recognized pasture communities for certain measures. The funding requirements include compliance with cross compliance throughout the company, the waiver of the application of municipal sewage sludge , and a minimum duration of the implementation of the required measures of five years. There is a points system for awarding the award, according to which the annual premium is calculated. Maximum rates of up to 900 euros per hectare of cultivation area affected, or an absolute maximum of 40,000 euros, which increases accordingly in the case of joint applications, apply.
