Overall complex

The plans for a new market hall began in 1905. Until then, the market was held on the Neumarkt in Breslau . Richard Plüddemann and Heinrich Küster were responsible for the planning and drafts . The location chosen was an area on what was then Sandstrasse, near the Oder ( sand bridge ) and in the immediate vicinity of the university district.

In the fall of 1905, the demolition of old apartment buildings on the site began. Construction work started a year later. The reinforced concrete structure was built by the construction company Lolat-Eisenbeton GmbH . The market hall was then opened on October 5, 1908. After it opened, the market hall developed into one of the most popular shopping opportunities in the city, and it still is today.

The hall was badly damaged in the Second World War . Shortly after the war, it was provisionally restored and restored between 1980 and 1983.

In the hall you will mainly find vegetable and fruit products, but also occasionally other goods.

architecture

The rectangular floor plan and the design of the facade are by Richard Plüddemann. The neo-Gothic exterior facade has been provided with bricks. The interior was designed by Heinrich Küster. The roof is supported inside by parabolic reinforced concrete structures.

The market hall has two towers, each with clocks.

Market hall no.2

At the same time as the market hall No. 1, another market hall was built south of the old town of Wroclaw in today's Ulica Kolejowa. It was built in the same style and floor plan. This hall was partly badly destroyed in World War II. It was not rebuilt afterwards. The ruins were initially left standing and only completely removed in 1973.
