The Fettercairn Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish town of Fettercairn in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. An additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2016.

history

In 1504 Fettercairn was granted market rights and thus the right to erect a market cross. The year 1670 is found on Fettercairn's market cross. In that year the market rights were renewed under John Middleton, 1st Earl of Middleton . It is discussed whether the year information only refers to the manufacture of the head and whether the shaft of the market cross dates from 1504.

According to tradition, the market cross was initially in what is now the Kincardine desert , which was already in decline at that time, and was only moved to Fettercairn in 1670. However, there are no documents for this process.
