Market Cross (Rossie)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rossie Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish desert of Rossie in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument has now been lifted.

description

It was George Kinnaird, 7th Lord Kinnaird , who dissolved the village of Rossie and moved the residents to the new village of Baledgarno . The space gained resulted in development opportunities for his Rossie Priory property . The market cross stands around 80 m south-east of the medieval Rossie Church , which has since been reconstructed, and is said to have roughly marked the center of the elongated village. In addition to the church and a stone called Loupin-on Stane , the market cross is the last visible remnant of the former village.

The market cross was made in 1746. In addition to the year, the monograms KG and RH can also be read on the structure. It rests on a stepped plinth . The market cross is designed in the form of a Corinthian column, whereby CANMORE also speaks of composite capitals . A ball and two lions and two unicorns each rest on the pillar.
