Norbert Susemihl (born August 26, 1956 in Hamburg ) is a German musician ( trumpet (also flugelhorn ), drums , vocals ) and band leader of traditional jazz .

biography

Susemihl began his musical career in Hamburg. At the age of 14 he started playing guitar in his first band . This band, The Shepherds , which he founded with Thomas L'Etienne , was a vocal quartet that mainly performed spiritual and gospel songs. In 1971 Susemihl began playing the trumpet; the band changed their name to Papa Tom's Lamentation Jazz Band , and played traditional jazz. First tours abroad with this band and as a guest soloist took him to Norway, Denmark, Holland and Belgium. In 1977/78 he was traveling with Sammy Rimington .

In 1978 and 1979 Susemihl traveled to New Orleans for the first time and stayed there for a whole year in 1980. For the next ten years Susemihl lived in New Orleans for four months each year, playing regularly with many of the local musicians from the older generations and the younger generation, covering all styles of New Orleans music. Recordings in New Orleans were made with Willie Humphrey , "Father" Al Lewis , Fred Lonzo , Lars Edegran , Orange Kellin, Frank Fields , Ernie Elly, Joseph "CoCoMo Joe" Barthelemy, Herlin Riley , Jason Marsalis , Louis Ford, Daniel Farrow , among others , Kerry Lewis, Seva Venet, and singer Wanda Rouzan. He also brought musicians, for example from the Preservation Hall, to Europe, for example on the occasion of the Maribo Jazz Festival in Denmark in 2006 with his New Orleans All Stars , with whom he performed in Scandinavia, Switzerland and Malaysia in the following years.

Since 1986 he has led the bands Norbert Susemihl's Arlington Annex (founded with the pianist Greta Milochi) and Norbert Susemihl's Arlington Brassband in Hamburg , with whom he has played at festivals and guest performances in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland occurred. His main formation today is Norbert Susemihl's Joyful Gumbo , which he founded in 2002 and which operates from Denmark.

Susemihl names Louis Armstrong , Bunk Johnson , Dee Dee Pierce , Alvin Alcorn , Jack Willis , Thomas Jefferson , Wynton Marsalis , Kid Thomas Valentine and Percy Humphrey as his most important influences and sources of inspiration .
