Rossie Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rossie Church is a church building near the Scottish town of Inchture in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In the Middle Ages there was a monastery at Rossie, but little is known about it. In 1243, a church dedicated to Saints Laurentius and Coman was built on the site . With the merger of the parish with the Inchtures, the church became obsolete in 1670 and fell into disrepair. The Lords Kinnaird had today's Rossie Church built as a private chapel on the same site around 1870.

description

The Rossie Church is isolated around two kilometers northeast of Inchture and northwest of Longforgan . The building constructed by T. S. Robertson is essentially a replica of the medieval church. Preserved fragments of the medieval building were integrated into the new structure on the north and east sides. The door on the north side is still the original door. The elongated quarry stone building has a length of 20.5 m and a width of 6.9 m. The masonry is 85 cm thick. The neo-Gothic ridge turret and buttresses probably do not correspond to the medieval original. In the interior there are numerous marble busts and monuments of the Kinnairds.
