The Marktplatz 27 building as the former district court and prison of the former judicial district of Kirchberg am Wagram and today's cultural center stands on the market square of the market town of Kirchberg am Wagram in the Tulln district in Lower Austria . history

In 1912/13 the building was built by Franz Österreicher in neoclassical style together with the Kirchberg courthouse under Emperor Franz Joseph .

Until it was closed in 1974, this prison was run as a branch of the Federal Institute for the Needy of Education Kaiserebersdorf , where it was used in the manner of a prison camp . After its closure as an educational institution, the building was used as a file archive until around 2011, for which it was adapted accordingly; Was cleaned and painted, the roof was renewed, all inventory was removed.

The property is owned by ARE Austrian Real Estate GmbH (FN 293512k) as a subsidiary of the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) . In 2017, an art project on transformation will take place in the building for the first time.

Building description

The house is located in a prison yard (movement yard), surrounded by a four meter high wall and with an area of ​​about 134 square meters. Connected to the prison is a 1,275 square meter garden with old trees, surrounded by wooden fence elements between masonry pillars.

The house has three floors (basement, ground floor with office, cells, work rooms, upper floor with cells) and is under monument protection with decision GZ 8725/82 of January 28, 1983 due to the ensemble situation and the cultural and historical importance.
