Markus Töns (born January 1, 1964 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2017 . Before that he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia .

biography

education and profession

Töns initially completed his school education in 1981 with the qualification for vocational school (secondary school leaving certificate). He then attended the Ricarda-Huch-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen, where he graduated from high school in 1985 .

He studied political science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, where he graduated in 1995 as a political scientist. From 1996 to 2001 he worked as a consultant for political training at the “Current Forum NRW”. From 2002 to 2005 he was a research assistant to Hans Frey, member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament .

Töns is divorced and has three children, two daughters and a son.

Töns has been a member of the SPD since 1987. He was initially involved in the board of Jusos Gelsenkirchen from 1988 to 1992 , of which he was deputy chairman from 1990 to 1992.

Since May 2018 Töns has been chairman of the SPD sub-district Gelsenkirchen, of which he has been a member since 2004. Before that he was chairman (2002 to 2008) and deputy chairman (2000 to 2002) of the local SPD association in Gelsenkirchen-Altstadt.

In the 2017 federal election, Markus Töns, the directly elected member of the Gelsenkirchen constituency, moved into the German Bundestag. He thus succeeded Joachim Poss , who after 37 years as a directly elected member of parliament for Gelsenkirchen did not stand again. He is Vice-Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs and a full member of the Committee on Economic and Energy.

Before his mandate as a member of the Bundestag, Töns was a member of the state parliament in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament for the constituency of Gelsenkirchen II from June 2005 to May 2017 . From 2012 to 2017 he represented North Rhine-Westphalia on the Committee of the Regions , where he was 1st Vice-President of the PES Group from 2015 until his departure .

Memberships

Töns is a member of the ver.di trade union , the Association for the Promotion of Youth Work of the DGB, the Pro Ruhrgebiet association and the non-partisan European Union Germany , which advocates a federal Europe and the European unification process.
