Marlon Santi
Marlon René Santi Gualinga (* 1976 in Sarayacu , Pastaza ) is an Ecuadorian politician with an ethnic Kichwa background. From 2008 to 2011 he was chairman of the Ecuadorian indigenous umbrella organization CONAIE .
Marlon Santi was politicized in the struggles of his indigenous home community Sarayacu against the planned exploitation of their forest areas by oil companies . In 2004 he became mayor of Sarayacu. Because of his resistance to the development of the forest for the oil companies, he was given several death threats.
On January 12, 2008, at a congress in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, he was unanimously elected chairman of CONAIE and is its youngest leader in its history. He is also the first CONAIE chairman from the eastern Amazon lowlands and from the local indigenous association CONFENIAE , but like his predecessors, he is kichwas-speaking .
Shortly after his inauguration, his wife Miriam Cisneros was kidnapped and tortured by strangers, who tried to extort information about alleged insurrection plans.
He currently lives in Quito with his wife Miriam Cisneros, with whom he has five children.
In April 2011 Marlon Santi was replaced as CONAIE chairman by the former ECUARUNARI chairman Humberto Cholango .
