The marbled garden spider ( Araneus marmoreus ) is a member of the genus of the cross spiders ( Araneus ).

features

The body length of the male is between 5 and 9 millimeters, the female reaches sizes between 9 and 15 millimeters. The back of the body is widest in the middle. The coloring and drawing can vary greatly. The front body, however, is usually light yellow-gray, often almost colorless. There is usually a narrow, dark longitudinal band on the top of the front body. The basic color of the back of the body is gray or brown. There are numerous white, yellowish or light red spots on it. In the front area there is a cross drawing made up of four light spots.

The variety Araneus marmoreus f. pyramidatus , the abdomen is almost monochrome white to lemon yellow. There is a clearly defined black spot in the rear area.

distribution and habitat

The marbled garden spider prefers damp, shady terrain such as wet meadows, alluvial forests or the edges of moors. This species is widespread in Central Europe and quite common in certain areas (e.g. in Northern Germany).

Way of life

Araneus marmoreus usually builds its network between low bushes or tall herbs. During the day she hides in a well camouflaged hiding place next to the net. The web of the marbled garden spider is very resistant. It can also catch large insects (e.g. hay horses ) in it. There are mature animals from August to October.
