Maro (martyr)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maro († late 1st century) was a Christian martyr and saint .

Maro is venerated as a saint on April 15, together with Eutyches and Victorinus , who were martyred around the same time, but not with him, under Emperor Trajan . They are said to have been slaves from the area around Flavia Domitilla , who accompanied them into exile on the island of Ponza. The three had worked as priests for the church and were finally captured and subjected to various tortures: Eutyches had been scourged to death by an Aurelian, Victorinus was put head first into a sulfur spring until he suffocated. Finally, Maro had to drag a huge boulder, but was miraculously not crushed by it; he was then beheaded. Some relics of Maro were eventually transferred to Metz .
