Marrabenta

The marrabenta is a form of Mozambican dance music . The name is derived from the Portuguese rebentar , or colloquially arrabentar , which means something like break, burst, explode .

The origins of the Marrabenta lie in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. The music form has influences from Mozambican and Portuguese folk music and from western pop music . It is often played with simple or improvised instruments. The texts are originally mostly in local slangs , the content ranges from socially critical to love songs. Early namable representatives of this form of music were Fany Pfumo and Dilon Djindji , the latter began his career around 1939. Marrabenta became popular in the 1980s with bands such as Eyuphuro and the Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique . More recently mainly by the band Mabulu , who toured Europe several times.
