Marta Kutas

Marta Kutas (born September 2, 1949 in Hungary ) is a Hungarian cognitive and neuroscientist.

Kutas is a Professor and Chair in Cognitive Science and Associate Professor in Neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She also heads the local language research center. 

In one of the first studies in the field of today's neurolinguistics , Kutas and her colleague Steven Hillyard discovered the N400 , an event-related potential (ERP) that is typically triggered by unexpected linguistic stimuli.

Career

In 1971, Kutas received a  Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College , a Masters in 1974, and a Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign , and in 1980 she completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Diego from. She then accepted a position as a neuroscientist at the Department of Neurosciences at UCSD, where she had been a member of the Department of Cognitive Science since it was founded in 1988 . In 2018, Kutas was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
