Marte Meo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marte Meo is a method of educational counseling in which video recording is used for behavioral observation and for learning. Originally tested on children with a developmental delay, this counseling method is used when working with people of all ages and with various issues.

Marte Meo is also the name of an organization that trains in this method.

history

Marte Meo was developed by the Dutch artist Maria Aarts in the late 1970s and early 1980s . She observed that parenting advisors repeatedly find it difficult to use the generally accepted method of informative discussions to convey helpful scientific knowledge to parents and other educators . The educators have difficulties understanding the often very abstract pedagogical terminology , recognizing the relevance of the knowledge in everyday life and applying it in practice.

method

The method is suitable for complementary relationships , for example for children and parents, students and teachers, clients and therapists.

In everyday situations, the behavior of those involved is recorded on video and then evaluated. Scenes where interaction works particularly well are particularly interesting. Then it is worked out which behaviors were particularly helpful for this. The strengths of the actors should be systematically recognized and highlighted, from which one should draw the strength to actively eliminate educational problems. The focus is on improving communication between parents and children as well as supporting development through conscious elements of experience. The aim is to practice and strengthen this behavior. The findings can often be transferred to other situations. Marte Meo is Latin and means "own initiative", translated here as "on your own".

The method is rather unsuitable for symmetrical relationships, for example for couples.

Maria Aarts

Maria Aarts, born on August 3, 1950 in Budel / Netherlands, the eighth of 14 children, studied organizational science at a technical college. In 1974 she worked in a children's home and in 1976 in a child psychiatric facility. In 1978 she and a colleague developed a day group as an alternative to inpatient accommodation.

“We don't film critical situations, but rather sequences in which it becomes clear which next development step is important for a person.
We cannot change people's life stories, but we can always invite positive developments. "
