Life and work

Hawie studied Audiovisual Communication in Lima (Instituto Peruano de Publicidad) and trained in photography and painting at the Centro de la Imagen. In 2001 he began studying directing at the Barcelona Film School. One of the short films he made there was nominated for the Sitges festival . During this time his photographs and paintings were exhibited in Barcelona and Los Angeles.

After three years he returned to Lima and received the “Young Artists” grant from Industrias Tekno. At the same time he became the managing director of a casting agency and worked as a freelance art director for advertising films. The limited possibilities of the Peruvian film industry brought Hawie to Germany in 2005. Here he realized several short and documentary film projects. In 2011 he started his postgraduate studies at the Art Academy for Media Cologne with a focus on film (feature film directing / screenwriting). The feature film Camille was his intermediate diploma there, which premiered at the Hof International Film Festival in 2013. Since then, Camille has screened at several international film festivals and was awarded the Best Student Award at the Mexico International Film Festival 2014 .

He successfully completed his studies in April 2015 with his second feature film, Toro . The diploma film received the final film funding from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and premiered at the 39th Montreal World Film Festival 2015. Toro celebrated its German premiere at the 49th Hof International Film Festival in 2015 and received a special mention from the jury as part of the “New German Cinema” award. Toro was also invited to the 66th Berlin Film Festival in 2016 and ran in the section “Perspektive Deutsches Kino” as a special contribution to “50 Years of the Hof Film Festival ”. The Studio Hamburg Newcomer Award nominated Hawie 2016 in the category "Best Director". He has had German citizenship since 2009. Martin Hawie works as a freelance director and author in Cologne .
