Martin Klingenspor (born December 3, 1961 ) is a German zoologist, animal physiologist and nutritionist. He is Professor of Molecular Nutritional Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (Else Kröner Fresenius Endowed Professorship).

Life

Klingenspor studied biology at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1981, graduating in 1987. There he received his doctorate in animal physiology summa cum laude under Gerhard Heldmaier in 1994 and was a post-doctoral student in Marburg and at the Lipid Research Laboratory of the West Los Angeles Veterans Association Medical Center (1995/96) with Karen Reue . From 1997 he was back in Marburg, where he qualified as a professor in 2001 and took on a substitute professorship for animal physiology in 2004. In 2007 he became a professor at the Technical University of Munich.

He deals with the physiology of the regulation of the energy balance in the body, adaptation of the metabolism to different environmental conditions, metabolic disorders in mice and the metabolic effects of secondary plant substances . He is particularly interested in the metabolic mechanisms of overweight and their regulation down to the molecular biological level. For example, he used knockout mice to investigate the role of uncoupling protein (UCP) from the mitochondria in lipid metabolism and the role of neuronal messengers (such as melanocyte-stimulating hormone , leptin ). He also showed the role of post-transcriptional processes in the seasonal control of body weight in hamsters. Together with colleagues, he demonstrated the presence of UCP 1, which is used to build up fat stores, in pouch mice, which indicates a very early evolutionary origin (150 million years ago) and thus an important advantage in early mammals via a thermogenesis mechanism that is independent of muscle tremors of environmental adaptation.

He has been on the editorial board of Obesity Facts since 2008 and co-editor of the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology since 2007 . He is a member of the International Hibernation Society, the German Zoological Society , the German Obesity Society and the American Physiological Society (2005).
