Martin Langner

Martin Langner (* 1966 ) is a German classical archaeologist .

After studying Classical Archeology and Classical Philology at the University of Cologne , Langner received his doctorate from Henner von Hesberg with a thesis on "Ancient graffiti drawings on immovable supports". As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked on a grant from the Gerda Henkel Foundation as part of the project led by Paul Zanker in Rome to research urban culture during the imperial era . He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Göttingen for one year and then from 2003 to 2012 at the Free University of Berlin . In 2012 he completed his habilitation there with the thesis “Masterpiece and mass-produced goods. Chronology, decor and function of late red-figure picture vases from Athens ”. He then headed the Digital Archeology Unit (CoDArchLab) at the University of Cologne. From 2013 to 2018 he was Professor of Classical Archeology and its Digital Methodology in Göttingen .

Langner's main research interests include contextual image analysis (especially Greek vase painting , Roman wall painting and relief), archaeological acculturation research, research into everyday culture and the use of scientific and information technology methods.
